François Carrier

Biography

b. 5 June 1961, Chicoutimi, Quebec, Canada. Carrier started his profession as a specialist jazz musician, playing alto saxophone in Vancouver in 1979. He shortly attracted interest from fellow music artists and an evergrowing viewers through his frequently audacious method of his music. Structured since 1982 in Montreal, he shows himself to be always a liquid and inventive performer of improvised music, specifically since the development in 1990 of his trio, where he was became a member of by bass participant Pierre Coté and drummer Michel Lambert. Following discharge of Intuition, that was nominated as Jazz Record Of THE ENTIRE YEAR on the 1998 Gala de l’ADISQ (Québec’s Music Honours present), Carrier’s trio toured European countries, playing on the Montreux Jazz Celebration. Also in 1998, Carrier founded Nouvel Outfit De Musique Improvisée (NoEMI), a gathering of like-minded free of charge players, among whom have already been Dewey Redman and Sonny Greenwich. Early in 2002, Carrier spent some a few months composing new functions in Rome, having earned an award with the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec. Even more travels of Canada plus some European countries implemented, as did even more acclaimed albums. Over time, in concert and occasionally on record, Carrier’s trio continues to be augmented by visitor pianists who’ve included Steve Amirault, who made an appearance on Carrier’s Juno Award-winning Compassion (2000), Paul Bley and Gary Peacock, noticed on Traveling Lighting (2004), Uri Caine, on All’Alba (2003), Jason Moran and Bobo Stenson. Among various other music artists with whom he spent some time working are Mat Maneri, Uwe Neumann and Gary Peacock. Carrier’s audio is hard and he episodes his music with verve and unpredictability, challenging, and successfully getting from audiences, focus on and knowledge of the quickly changing moods he explores.
