Flip Phillips

Turn Phillips, who angered some critics in early stages because he gained riotous applause for his exciting solos during Jazz on the Philharmonic concerts, for over 50 years was a fantastic tenor saxophonist equally gifted on stomps, ballads, and criteria. He performed clarinet regularly within a Brooklyn cafe during 1934-1939, is at Frankie Newton’s group (1940-1941), and spent amount of time in the rings of Benny Goodman, Wingy Manone, and Crimson Norvo. However, it had been in 1944 that he previously his breakthrough. Being a well-featured soloist with Woody Herman’s Herd (1944-1946), Phillips became a huge superstar.
