New York-based music group Firewater incorporated a worldwide range of music influences to their highly active sound. A loosely knit ensemble focused around the business lead vocals of ex-Cop Take Cop bass participant Tod A. (given birth to: Tod Ashley), Firewater linked together such affects as Klezmer, Indian wedding ceremony music, art-punk, and Tom Waits-style cabaret poetry to generate their heady, frequently quite danceable audio. In conjunction with Tod A.’s acerbic, post-apocalyptic, and death-obsessed lyrics, Firewater was a music group to become reckoned with nearly right from the start. Shortly after developing in 1995, Firewater released its debut, LOG OFF the Cross, WE ARE IN NEED OF the Solid wood for the Open fire. Both it and 1998’s The Ponzi Plan presented guitarist Duane Denison of Jesus Lizard, drummer Yuval Gabay of Spirit Coughing, and saxophone and accordion participant Kurt Hofmann from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The sultry vocals of Elysian Areas’ Jennifer Charles also drifted through both albums. Charles came back for 2001’s even more pop-oriented Psychopharmacology; additional contributions originated from saxophonist Ori Kaplan and sitar participant Oren Bloedow. The outcomes had been The Golden Hour, which Bloodshot Information released in springtime 2008. After touring to get that record, A. resolved in Istanbul, and documented generally there and in Tel Aviv during 2011’s Arab Springtime, reuniting with Muskat being a collaborator.
