Biography
Madison, WI’s Fireplace Town is principally remembered due to the band’s regards to Garbage. Made up of Duke Erikson (vocals, electric guitar), Phil Davis (vocals, electric guitar), and Butch Vig (drums, percussion, support vocals), Fireplace Town’s light, jangly pop given university radio with another dosage of buzzing guitars and folk-rock harmonies in the past due ’80s. Vig and Erikson had been previously within the group Spooner. After Spooner split up, Davis, Vig, and Steve Marker (guitars) produced the short-lived First Person in 1986. A calendar year afterwards, Davis, Vig, and Erikson collaborated once again as Fire City, launching the LP Within the Center of the Center Country. The record received compliment from Rolling Rock magazine; however, it had been too tame also for pre-grunge choice radio. The video for “Carry the Torch” briefly snared MTV’s interest, but Fire City was lost within a downpour of similar-sounding performers. Fire Town documented another record, 1989’s Good Lifestyle, before contacting it quits. In the first ’90s, Vig’s creation focus on albums from Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins, and L7 heightened his position within the choice rock and roll community. Vig reunited with Erikson and Marker within the punk music group Rectal Drip, essentially a fill-in group for canceled gigs. The trio became Garbage in 1993, adding vocalist Shirley Manson in 1994.
