Fiddlin’ John Carson

Biography

Fiddlin’ John Carson had been 55 when in 1923 the OKeh label released “Small Old VACATION CABIN within the Street”/”The Aged Hen Cackled” — the very first recording by way of a strictly nation musician and arguably the start of the united states music recording sector. Carson was created within the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia in 1868, and proved helpful in natural cotton mills for over twenty years until his fiddling abilities won many contests. He started executing in minstrel displays, and had become quite popular throughout the Georgia region — a lot in order that Atlanta home furniture salesman Polk Brockman suggested Carson’s name to OKeh field recorder Ralph Peer. Though Peer decided to record the fiddler, he was disgusted using the outcomes and sent just a few copies towards the home furniture store — then your only shop for information. Brockman sold-out of many pressings, convincing Peer that there is market for hillbilly recordings. Carson was taken to New York past due in 1923 to begin with recording the to begin his over 150 edges for the label. The next year, Carson up to date his old-timey sound by documenting using a string music group known as the Virginia Reelers. He also documented as a humor duo along with his little girl, Rosa Lee (referred to as Moonshine Kate). Carson’s fortunes dropped during the Despair, however; his last recordings had been for Victor Bluebird in 1934. He afterwards proved helpful as an elevator operator on the Georgia Condition Capitol, employment he received from governor Eugene Talmadge in substitution for the favorite musician’s advertising campaign help. Rounder provides released a compilation from the fiddler’s recordings using the Virginia Reelers and Moonshine Kate.
