Fay Hield

Given birth to and raised in Western Yorkshire, folk designer and academics Fay Hield seemed destined to carve a profession in traditional folk music. With her dad playing within the popular Bacca Pipes Folk Golf club in Keighley, Hield and her sister had been taken beneath the golf club member’s wings when their mom passed away, developing a connection of community and custom that would continue to motivate. While at school in Newcastle learning for the Bachelor of Music in folk and traditional music, she helped type the a cappella folk quartet the Witches of Elswick in 2001. The quartet disbanded after six years jointly, and Hield had taken time out from the folk picture for a couple years. In ’09 2009, following a proceed to the fringes of Sheffield with her partner, fellow folk musician Jon Boden, Hield came back to performing within a trio with British Acoustic Collective’s Rob Habron and Bellowhead’s Sam Sweeney, playing obscure and seldom performed traditional folk music. Released on Subject Records this year 2010, her debut record, Looking Glass, highlighted a variety of traditional music and ballads. This year 2010 she also finished her Ph.D. in British folk singing as well as the structure of community at Sheffield School. Hield’s second record, Orfeo, came 2 yrs afterwards in 2012, and noticed her supported by the Hurricane Party, comprising Jon Boden, Rob Habron, Sam Sweeney, Andy Reducing, and Martin Simpson. That calendar year she also began lecturing in music on the School of Sheffield, focusing on folk music and its own shaping of community. The next calendar year Hield helped come up with the folk supergroup the entire British, conceived to celebrate the combining of folk melody collections with the British Folk Melody and Dance Culture through creation of the very most extensive and searchable data source of United kingdom folk music, music, dances, and traditions.
