So named honoring the anti-hero of some legendary French criminal offense novels, Fantômas was formed by vocalist Mike Patton in the wake from the break up of his previous music group, Faith FORGET ABOUT. After reducing a rough demonstration in early 1998, Patton recruited Melvins guitarist Hype Osborne, Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn, and Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo to flesh out the documenting. The group after that performed their debut display in SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA in mid-June of this calendar year, as the group’s record debut was a cacophonous cover of T. Rex’s “Chariot Choogle” for the compilation Great Jewish Music: Marc Bolan in 1998 (released on John Zorn’s Tzadik label), and toured through the entire summer. Springtime 1999 saw the discharge of Fantômas’ self-titled debut record (the 1st discharge on Patton’s recently shaped record label, Ipecac), that was followed by even more touring. By tour’s end, Fantômas was briefly placed on keep as its associates returned with their various other rings, but by early 2001, the quartet acquired recorded another record. Entitled The Director’s Cut, the recording featured reworked addresses of movie styles, like the Godfather, Cape Dread, and Rosemary’s Baby, amongst others (the music group prepared on including a edition of “Just what a Sense” from Flashdance, but needed to lower it in the last second because of legal complications). The music group spent the rest of 2001 touring behind the recording, as Patton hinted how the group may proceed directly back to the studio room by year’s end to focus on an recording of all-new materials.
