Ezra Furman & the Harpoons certainly are a Chicago-based combo built round the tunes of innovator Furman, whose music combine an idiosyncratic wit and edgy, confessional lyrics with clever pop melodies. Furman was created and elevated in Chicago, and started dabbling in songwriting as an adolescent after he was presented with a guitar like a pub mitzvah present. He didn’t consider his talents general public until early 2006, when he started attending Tufts University or college in Medford, Massachusetts and struck up a companionship with three additional guys thinking about music — guitarist Jahn Sood, bassist Work Mukkada, and drummer Adam Abrutyn. The four created Ezra Furman & the Harpoons and started playing college student hangouts with periodic jaunts into Boston; a couple of months later on, they documented an recording, Beat Beat Defeat, that they released themselves. After plenty of regional shows and periodic touring (including busking around the roads of NY through the 2007 CMJ Music Marathon), Furman & the Harpoons found the interest of mentioned indie label Minty New Records, who delivered the band in to the studio room with manufacturer Brian Deck and released their initial nationally distributed record, Banging Down the Doorways. In 2008, Sood still left the Harpoons and brand-new guitarist Andrew Langer emerged on board because they relocated to Chicago. Langer made an appearance on the second record for Minty Clean, Inside the BODY; also made by Deck, the record was popular with critics, using the Chicago Tribune and Paste Mag both naming it once of the greatest Chicago-based albums of 2008. Furman continuing to tour continuously, using the Harpoons so that as a single action, as positive press and person to person helped to construct an impressive pursuing. In 2011, Furman & the Harpoons came back with their 4th record, Mysterious Power, that was documented in LA with manufacturer Doug Boehm and released by Crimson Parlor Records.
