The Exploding Celebrity Orchestra happened when the Chicago Cultural Middle as well as the Jazz Institute approached cornetist and composer Rob Mazurek about piecing together an avant-garde jazz ensemble to get a Chicago live concert. Mazurek constructed an orchestra of improvising Chicago music artists (including several people of Tortoise), rehearsed it, so when the dirt resolved, an interlocking collection called WE ALL HAVE BEEN from SOMEPLACE ELSE was performed. Informing a celestial tale that combined celebrities, stingrays, electrical eels, parrots, phoenixes, and rockets (and offering actual electrical eel sounds documented by Mazurek at a study facility), WE ALL HAVE BEEN from SOMEPLACE ELSE was documented by John McEntire at his Soma Studio room in Chicago and made an appearance in recording type from Thrill Jockey Information in 2007. Music artists in the Exploding Celebrity Orchestra, at least during the SOMEPLACE ELSE recording, included Mazurek (cornet), Nicole Mitchell (flute), Jim Baker (piano), Corey Wilkes (flügelhorn), Jeff Parker (acoustic guitar), Matt Bauder (bass clarinet and tenor saxophone), Jeb Bishop (trombone), Josh Berman (cornet), Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone), John McEntire (marimba and tubular bells), Matt Lux (electrical bass), Jason Ajemian (acoustic bass), Mike Reed (drums, percussion, and noticed), and John Herndon (drums). In 2008, Excitement Jockey released the sophomore Exploding Celebrity Orchestra record, Costs Dixon with Exploding Superstar Orchestra, a collaborative time between your ensemble and Dixon in another of the legendary free of charge jazz trumpeter’s last documented appearances. (Dixon passed away in June of 2010 at age 84.) The record proclaimed the departure of Wilkes and McEntire in the group as well as the addition of vocalist Damon Hair from the Eternals. The lineup transformed again by enough time from the ensemble’s third record, Stars Have Forms, released by Delmark this year 2010. Baker, Parker, Berman, and Ajemian acquired all departed, as well as the Exploding Superstar Orchestra added Jason Stein (bass clarinet), Greg Ward (alto saxophone), Carrie Biolo (gongs, temple blocks, vibes, percussion), and Jeff Kowalkowski (piano) furthermore to mainstays Mazurek, Mitchell, Bauder, Bishop, Adasiewicz, Lux, Herndon, and Reed. THE AREA Between, a Compact disc/DVD credited towards the Exploding Superstar Electro Acoustic Outfit, made an appearance on Delmark in 2013, with percussionist Mauricio Takara and sampler participant Guilherme Granado signing up for Herndon, Bauder, Mazurek, Hair, Mitchell, Biolo, and Kowalkowski. The same calendar year, Matter Anti-Matter, a dual CD having a live Exploding Superstar Orchestra record documented with Roscoe Mitchell in ’09 2009, and a disk of Mazurek’s single electronic works, made an appearance on Rogue Artwork. Galactic Parables, Vol. 1, a dual CD recorded reside in Italy and Chicago in 2013, premiered by Cuneiform in 2015.
