An understated, active singer within jazz and popular requirements, Etta Jones was a fantastic singer always well worth hearing. She was raised in NY with 16, toured with Friend Johnson. She debuted on record with Barney Bigard’s pickup music group (1944) for Dark & White, performing four Leonard Feather tunes, three which (including “Bad Gal Blues”) had been strikes for Dinah Washington. She documented other tunes during 1946-1947 for RCA and caused Earl Hines (1949-1952). Jones’ edition of “Don’t Head to Strangers” (1960) was popular and she produced many albums for Prestige during 1960-1965. Jones toured Japan with Artwork Blakey (1970), but was mainly off record during 1966-1975. Nevertheless, beginning in 1976, Etta Jones (an attractive interpreter of requirements, ballads, and blues) started recording frequently for Muse, frequently with the great tenor saxophonist Houston Person.
