Mixing flamenco-styled guitars with contemporary dance rhythms, La Esperanza was led by songwriter, producer, and session ace Carlos Villalobos, who documented the project’s self-titled 1998 debut LP using the involvement of guitarist André Barboza (on two monitors) and bassist Rob Hagopian. After changing the project’s name to Esperanza (minus the “La”) in 2001, Villalobos released sophomore record Esperanza II, once again with guitarist Barboza taking part on selected monitors.
