Erling Kroner

b. 16 Apr 1943, Copenhagen, Denmark. Composer and trombonist who started playing dixieland music in the first 60s, but shortly also participated in ‘free of charge’ jazz groupings with John Tchicai among others. Kroner participated in George Russell’s ‘Electronic Sonata For Souls Loved By Character’ performed by Russell using the Danish Radio Big Music group in 1969. By the end of that calendar year a DownBeat stipend allowed him to review on the Berklee University Of Music. In the 80s Kroner co-led with drummer Leif Johansson a music group, which, with very similar music and orchestration, expanded complicated compositions for quasi-operatic or dramatic stagings. Kroner’s long-standing desire for Argentinian lifestyle and music, specifically the tango, is normally reflected in a number of compositions focused on Astor Piazzolla and Dino Saluzzi. Kroner in addition has visited and caused music artists in Argentina. A gifted composer and arranger Kroner provides successfully followed Charles Mingus’ improvisational approach to writing and organizing in changing moods, metres and tempos for soloists within a 10-piece music group that employs uncommon textures and voicings, e.g. a tuba in the brass section.
