Erland & the Carnival

Shaped in the past due 2000s by multi-instrumentalist Simon Tong (the Verve, Blur, the nice, the Bad & the Queen), guitarist Gawain Erland Cooper, and drummer David Nock, London-based folk-rock outfit Erland & the Carnival started by tinkering with contemporary neo-psychedelic arrangements of traditional Scottish and English folk songs. Influenced by English folk symbols like Pentangle, Fairport Convention, and Steeleye Period, the group, which also contains Andy Bruce, Georgia Sands, and Danny Wheeler, released its eponymous debut recording this year 2010. The group’s sophomore outing, 2011’s horror-themed Nightingale, was documented over a period of 90 days aboard the HMS Chief executive, a World Battle I period anti-submarine dispatch moored within the River Thames, while 2014’s Shutting Time noticed the group eschewing the fairy stories, poems, and traditional materials of previously outings for a far more personal, albeit still chamber folk-oriented, assortment of songs.
