Eric Watson

b. 5 July 1955, Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA. Watson started playing piano as a little child but 1st performed rock in a variety of elements of his house state. Then studied traditional music at Oberlin University, Ohio, before shifting to France. There, he worked well in a variety of contexts, including traditional, jazz, so that as an accompanist having a dance troupe. For another couple of years he performed in France, the united states and Central America, on the way establishing what would turn into a long-term musical romantic relationship with John Lindberg. Although he offers continued to try out in his homeland, he steadily extended his origins in France. Watson has generated his career in a fashion that suggests very much greater affinity using the traditional tradition of Western music than that where jazz is usually rooted. Classically qualified, he has discovered methods to bridge the space between created and improvised music, getting to his function a strong feeling of framework while keeping glimpses of spontaneity. Generally working in little organizations, up to quartet, he’s a rigorous, brooding pianist, showing towards the discerning substantial depths of feelings. Among the music artists with whom he offers collaborated are Ray Anderson, Daniel Humair, Steve Lacy (on many events including 1988’s The Amiens Concert), Lindberg (in duo), Albert Mangelsdorff, Paul Motian, and Linda Sharrock. Maybe inevitably, given the amount of target audience commitment his function needs, many critics discovered his more available 1998 trio recording with Tag Dresser and Ed Thigpen, Silent Hearts, the very best of his fairly brief discography. Although quite definitely his own guy, some auditors, in looking for touchstones, have recommended stylistic links with pianists as assorted as Expenses Evans, Thelonious Monk, Jimmy Rowles, and Mal Waldron. Nearer listening shows that none of the is usually a valid progenitor, but that by nearing his music in his extremely idiosyncratic style, Watson offers excavated a fresh dark mine of motivation.
