Emma

Area of the equal mid-’90s Philadelphia psych-pop/space rock and roll scene while Bardo Fish pond, the Asteroid #4, and Transient Waves, Emma also gives a hint of Pleasure Division-style darkness with their mellow audio. Basically vocalist/guitarist Rick Henderson (who also takes on keyboards with Eltro, Town of Horns, Ashtabula, the Wayward Blowing wind, as well as others, often beneath the name Elmer Clayton) with help from bassist Dean McNulty of Chopper, and drummer Ed Farnsworth, Emma hasn’t been a full-time task, but their periodic produces will probably attract followers of additional “Psychedelphia” bands aswell as folks keen on Windy & Carl, Amp, or Ghost. Emma’s 1st launch was a six-song demonstration tape that was originally packed inside a handbag of glitter. Four of these songs made an appearance in the significantly less annoyingly packed Blue Lady EP. (Actually, Blue Girl, a set of 7″ singles packed in solid cardboard having a Japanese-style obi remove, is gorgeously packed, as are the majority of Emma’s produces.) The 1st full-length, 1997’s Difference Engine #23, was a noisier affair that vaguely recalls the Olivia Tremor Control in places. The next move was absolutely perplexing. Henderson required two out-takes from your Difference Engine #23 classes, “THE BUSINESS Picnic” and “Obtainable,” pressed 666 copies of the vinyl single, covered them in categorized ads from your Philadelphia Inquirer that were drawn on having a reddish marker, and mailed every single copy to arbitrarily chosen regional businesses. It could have already been a promotion stunt. Conversely, it might have already been Henderson’s method of stating “Drill down me, I’m freaky!” Might have been both. Henderson adopted that dada workout with Emma’s most simple and fulfilling record, 1998’s Backyard Town 44. Puckishly sequenced as though it had been a Times of Upcoming Passed-style concept record based on the idea of the average workday (tune titles on the trunk cover are shown by period and place, like “3:45 a.m.: Bedroom” or “2:00 p.m.: Workplace [Water Cool]”; the true tune titles can be found on the far side of the Compact disc tray credit card), Garden Town 44 is truly a solid and varied assortment of psych-pop music in several styles. From then on triumph, Henderson considered his other tasks and Emma lapsed.
