Biography

Composer Elliot Goldenthal was created Might 2, 1954, in NEW YORK, going to study in the Manhattan College of Music under John Corigliano and Aaron Copland. He 1st increased to prominence in 1988 for his Obie Award-winning focus on Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass, a cooperation along with his wife, movie director Julie Taymor. The next season, Goldenthal also have scored his initial feature film, Gus Truck Sant’s outstanding Drugstore Cowboy, carrying on to alternative between stage and display screen throughout his profession. In 1990, he constructed “Darkness Play Scherzo,” commissioned by ASCAP honoring Leonard Bernstein’s 70th birthday. “Pastime Variants,” commissioned with the Haydn-Mozart Chamber Orchestra in special event from the 75th wedding anniversary of Ebbets Field, premiered on the Brooklyn Academy of Music that same season. Goldenthal came back to film in 1992 along with his rating to David Fincher’s Alien 3, getting his initial Academy Prize nomination for his focus on Neil Jordan’s 1994 work Interview using the Vampire. He and Jordan continued to be regular collaborators within the years to check out, teaming on images including Michael Collins, The Butcher Boy, and In Dreams. Probably Goldenthal’s most acclaimed task is certainly 1996’s “Fireplace Paper Drinking water,” an oratorio commissioned with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra honoring the 20th wedding anniversary from the Vietnam Battle; the Sony Classical documenting from the piece highlighted soloist Yo-Yo Ma. After reuniting with Taymor on the stage adaptation from the Carlo Gozzi fable The Green Parrot, in 1997 Goldenthal was commissioned with the American Ballet Theater to compose a ballet motivated by Shakespeare’s Othello; in 1999, he also have scored Taymor’s initial feature film, Titus.

1 Was nearly killed on December 13, 2005 in an accident in his home. While leaning back in a chair at his kitchen table, he fell, smashing the back of his head on the floor and causing a double hematoma. He spent months in therapy regaining the ability to speak.
2 Uncle-in-law of Danya Taymor.
3 Was introduced to Julie Taymor by a mutual friend in 1980 who felt they shared a similar sense of the grotesque. Although they have been together over 20 years, they have never married.
