After hanging out within the band Dividing the Plunder, couple Tasha and Justin Golden began are Ellery. Merging the noises of Sarah McLachlan, Ben Folds, and option folk, the Cincinnati-based few wrote, documented, and released the Make Your Problems Mine EP independently in 2005. Their hometown warmly received their debut with reviews that are positive appearing in regional newspapers, while regional public radio train station WNKU place them in regular rotation. Following a feature in Performing Songwriter publication, Virt Records approached the band, authorized them, and delivered them back to the studio to carefully turn the EP right into a full-length recording. The result, Laying Awake, premiered in 2006.
