Known on her behalf modesty — not really unlike old compatriot Maria Yudina — Leonskaja was mentored by Richter and frequently performed duets with him. She’d hardly ever reach the important and artistic levels of her great instructor, but her popularity as an imaginative interpreter and formidable specialist have raised her to nearly legendary position, with evaluations to Clara Haskil as well as other key pad icons. Her selection of repertory continues to be fairly conservative over time, with staples within the concerto and single styles by Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, with very much chamber music. Within the last mentioned realm, she’s collaborated using the Alban Berg and Borodin quartets, using the Vienna Philharmonic Chamber Outfit, with cellist Heinrich Schiff, and several other performers. In 1978 she emigrated towards the Western, settling in Vienna. Her debut in the 1979 Salzburg Event was an excellent triumph, and she quickly founded a status that yielded invites within the next years from the best orchestras overseas, including those in NY, Cleveland, LA, London, Berlin, Leipzig, and Hamburg. Leonskaja’s recordings had been drawing acclaim aswell: her 1992 Compact disc of Brahms’ sonatas received Belgium’s exclusive Caecilia Reward. In 1996 Teldec released what will be among Richter’s last recordings, duet sonatas by Mozart and Grieg, with Leonskaja. Richter passed away the following 12 months. In the brand new hundred years Leonskaja continues to be very energetic on the concert picture with numerous looks at main concert locations.
