El Vez

Biography

Because Elvis is becoming an international organization that may communicate across country wide and cultural limitations, it shows up as no real surprise that Un Vez — the personal proclaimed “Mexican Elvis” — has arrive. Un Vez, aka Robert Lopez, continues to be kicking throughout the L.A. underground music picture for nearly two decades. He first made an appearance in the first L.A. punk music group the Zeros and performed in Catholic Self-discipline (which also spawned lesbian folk vocalist Phranc). While his information are excellent records of the Un Vez phenomenon, the only path to get the entire Un Vez experience would be to find his concert events, which feature his music group the Spiders from Memphis as well as the wonderful Un Vettes, cleverly called Priscilita, Gladysita, Lisa Maria, and Que Linda Thompson. The very best cultural reference factors to help explain an Un Vez show will be the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, a Tom Jones NEVADA gig, the LSD bout of Dragnet, and Elvis Presley’s ’68 return special. Hearing Un Vez is comparable to hearing the live-band exact carbon copy of sampling. An market on any provided night could be treated to six costume changes and may hear equipment of a minimum of 200 songs, not absolutely all of these Elvis recordings. For example, one of is own medleys presented “You Ain’t ONLY a Chihuahua” and an instrumental edition from the Beastie Kids’ “Appreciation,” combined in using the business lead acoustic guitar riff from Santana’s “Dark Magic Female” laid underneath Pole Stewart’s “Maggie Might,” which melded into “En un Barrio” (aka “Within the Ghetto”) and completed up with the mandolin range that concludes R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religious beliefs.” Despite his usage of laughter, Un Vez can’t be created off like a post-modern joke. His lyrics (often rewrites of Elvis recordings or additional popular tracks) have become politics and pro-Latino. Similar to Rage Against the device, his tracks are full of references towards the Zapatistas along with other Mexican revolutionaries. Unlike the above-mentioned music group, he will not defeat the viewers over the mind with didactic polemics and testosterone-fueled monster chords. Rather, he depends on the most obvious play on terms (“State It Loud, I’m Dark brown and I’m Happy” and “Misery Tren”) and smart sociable satire (in the climax of “Immigration Period” — sung towards the tune of “Dubious Thoughts” — he shouts, “I’ve got my green cards…I’d like my gold cards!”). Located in East LA, he is involved with anti-gang applications along with other community outreach applications — a relaxing reminder that certain doesn’t have to reduce his / her love of life to stay an activist.
