Edward Simon


Innovative jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader Edward Simon was created in Punta, Credit cardón, Venezuela in 1969, initial traveling to america in 1981 at 12 years and attending the Performing Arts School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating at age group 15, he examined traditional piano and music functionality under a scholarship or grant at Philadelphia’s College or university from the Arts, after that moved on towards the Manhattan College of Music, where he researched jazz piano and music functionality. By 1988 he was executing and recording skillfully; Simon produced his first documented appearance over the 1988 Greg Osby record Mind Video games, and the next year he became a member of saxophonist Bobby Watson’s Horizon outfit, remaining using the music group until 1994 and showing up on such Watson albums because the Inventor (1990), Present Tense (1992), and Midwest Shuffle (1994). Upon departing Watson’s group, Simon joined up with trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s music group between 1994 and 2002; the pianist could be noticed on several Blanchard albums, including Intimate Defiance as well as the score towards the Spike Lee-directed film Clockers (both 1995), THE GUTS Speaks (1996), the rating towards the Kasi Lemmons film Eve’s Bayou (1997), and Let’s Obtain Lost (2001). Of these years, Simon also made an appearance on recordings by famous brands guitarist Kevin Eubanks, alto saxophonist Dave Binney, flutist Herbie Mann, and tenor saxophonist Tag Turner. Simon’s debut being a leader found its way to 1994 with Beauty Within over the Audioquest label; the record also presented listeners towards the Edward Simon Group, a trio offering the pianist associated with electrical bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Horacio “Un Negro” Hernández. The next year discovered Simon documenting and liberating an eponymous sophomore recording with a fresh trio offering bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Adam Cruz, alongside periodic support from Turner on tenor saxophone and Milton Cardona on percussion. Simon extended his outfit beyond the post-bop piano trio file format for 1998’s La Bikina, including both Turner and Binney on saxophones and Diego Urcola on trumpet furthermore to drummer/percussionist Cruz, bassist Ben Road, percussionist Pernel Saturnino, and Cardona adding vocals. Nevertheless, the ensuing years would discover Simon continue steadily to explore the options from the piano-bass-drums trio with some recordings including 2003’s THE PROCEDURE (with bassist John Patitucci and drummer Eric Harland); 2004’s Simplicitas (with bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Adam Cruz); and 2006’s Unicity, 2009’s Poesía, and 2013’s Trio Reside in NY at Jazz Regular (all with Patitucci and drummer Brian Cutting tool). In the meantime, Simon and Binney co-founded the collaborative innovative jazz quartet Afinidad in 2000; the music group (with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Cutting tool) released an eponymous debut in 2001 and Océanos in 2007. In 2003 Simon founded Outfit Venezuela, an ambitious task melding innovative jazz with the original musics of his house nation, and in 2005 he received a Chamber Music America fee to compose Venezuelan Collection for the ensemble. Simon set up ten music artists (including saxophonist Turner and drummer Cruz) from america, Venezuela, and Colombia to record the collection at Brooklyn’s Systems Two studio room in 2012; the record Venezuelan Suite premiered with the Sunnyside label in January 2014. Simon can be a member from the SF Jazz Collective.
