Biography
Eddie Palmieri is among the primary Latin jazz pianists, blessed with a method that fuses such ubiquitous jazz affects as the varieties of Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, and McCoy Tyner right into a Latin framework. No purist, he in addition has shown a pleasant willingness to test out fusions of Latin and non-Latin music. Like his old sibling Charlie, Eddie began playing young (eight) and examined traditional piano while also playing drums. He produced his professional debut with Johnny Segui’s orchestra in 1955 and finally joined up with Tito Rodriguez’s well-known music group in 1958-1960. In 1961, Palmieri produced his highly important music group La Perfecta, whose flute and twin- or triple-trombone entrance line produced American jazz music artists like Herbie Mann get sucked in; he also have scored heavily within an exceptional 1966 cooperation with Cal Tjader, Un Sonido Nuevo (Verve). After La Perfecta split in 1968 because of financial complications, Palmieri used the Tico and Fania All-Stars, documented with Alfredo “Chocolat” Armenteros, Cachao, and Justo Betancourt, and, like his sibling, cut some Latin boogaloo periods. Around the middle-’60s, Palmieri started formal research of arranging, as well as the Monk impact became even more pronounced in his piano function. While documenting for the Latin Coco label within the mid-’70s, Palmieri began to blend salsa with R&B, pop, rock and roll, Spanish vocals, and jazz improvisation. Short affiliations with Columbia in the past due ’70s and Capitol (in little league with David Sanborn) in the past due ’80s didn’t produce a discovery hit, although second option attempt was targeted squarely in the burgeoning “jazz-lite” marketplace. Through the ’90s, Palmieri continued to be a critical preferred for albums like 1993’s jazz-oriented Palmas (1993) for the normally traditional Nonesuch label, and a group of recordings for the RMM label. He came back to his La Perfecta times in Apr 2002 with La Perfecta II within the Concord Jazz label. Two even more albums for Concord adopted, Ritmo Caliente in 2003 and Pay attention Right here! in 2005. A yr later, he documented the recording Simpático co-billed with Brian Lynch, and in 2011 he teamed with sibling Charlie for the aptly entitled Salsa Brothers.
