Biography
Eddie & Ernie were the Phoenix-based spirit duo of Eddie Campbell and Ernie Johnson, issuing about 15 singles between 1963 and 1971. To create matters just a little complicated, a number of the singles had been acknowledged to Ernie & Eddie, the brand new Bloods, or Ernie & Ed. There have been also 1967 single produces by Campbell and Johnson. Running right through in regards to a dozen brands, they by no means got any significant graph action, while some from the singles made an appearance on fairly big imprints like Columbia, Chess, and Buddah. These were great spirit singers, though, frequently recording their very own materials, sometimes sounding similar to Memphis or Alabama deep spirit singers having a somewhat much less avowedly church-like overlay, occasionally going into even more minimal melodies and downbeat subject material than most such spirit performers do. Eddie & Ernie, like a lot of spirit singers, did time in gospel groupings as young people before starting up being a duo. They initial worked within the studio room as history vocalists on the 1961 one by Small Worley & the Drops, and sang history on various other singles prior to making their initial recordings as some (originally as Ernie & Eddie) in 1963. That tripped a path of singles that had taken them through many brands, including Nightingale, Checker, Tomorrow, Eastern, 20th Century-Fox, Chess, Shazam, Columbia, Artco, Revue, and Buddah. Even though records had been average-to-above average spirit and never significantly less than experienced, they lacked a good unifying design or that certain great melody or two that could grab nationwide airplay. Due to that these were like lots of the uncounted spirit also-rans from the ’60s, albeit types that persevered and surely got to record a lot more than most. While some of the singles sounded as though they might have been performed in Memphis or Muscles Shoals, in addition they did poppier unhappy ballads and dance music with a far more North production experience, and actually these are even more distinct than their churchier deep soul-ish recordings. In the first ’70s, both served as performers within a Phoenix music group known as Phoenix Express, though just one single song offers surfaced, and decades down the road a Compact disc compilation. In 2002, the Kent Compact disc Lost Friends constructed two-dozen paths spanning Eddie & Ernie’s profession, including solo efforts, previously unreleased materials, and recordings which they sang which were billed to Phoenix Express, the brand new Bloods, and Small Worley & the Drops.
