Eddie Durham

Biography

Eddie Durham, a somewhat forgotten name in jazz background, was the 1st essential jazz soloist to become featured on guitar (in 1938 using the Kansas Town Five), predating Charlie Christian by way of a 12 months. He also performed trombone throughout the majority of his profession and was quite significant like a swing-era arranger, as well. He began playing acoustic guitar and trombone with six siblings within the Durham Brothers music group. Durham toured in a few territory bands within the Midwest, was with Walter Page’s Blue Devils, and caused Bennie Moten (1929-1933) with whom he produced his documenting debut. After shifting to NY in 1934, Durham proved helpful as an arranger with Willie Bryant and used Jimmie Lunceford (1935-1937) and Count number Basie (1937-1938). He also added agreements to Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller, in 1940 led a short-lived big music group of his very own and during 1941-1943 was the musical movie director for the International Sweethearts of Tempo. Durham afterwards led an usually all-female group and freelanced mainly as an arranger. In 1969, he came back to active using Pal Tate and in old age used the Countsmen (with whom he documented) as well as the Harlem Blues and Jazz Music group. Among Durham’s most well-known arrangements over time were “Moten Golf swing” for Bennie Moten, Jimmy Lunceford’s “Lunceford Particular,” several significant charts for Count number Basie (“Topsy,” “Swinging the Blues,” and “Jumpin’ on the Woodside”), and Glenn Miller’s “Within the Disposition.”
