Eddie Boyd & His Blues Band


b. Edward Riley Boyd, 25 November 1914, Stovall, Mississippi, USA, d. 13 July 1994, Helsinki, Finland. Boyd was a half-brother of Memphis Slim along with a cousin of Muddy Waters. He spent his early years on Stovall’s Plantation but went away following a dispute with an overseer. Self-taught on acoustic guitar and piano, he worked well across the south through the 30s, as both ‘Small Eddie’ and ‘Ernie’ Boyd, from basics in Memphis, before settling in Chicago where he worked well inside a steel-mill. He was energetic in music, carrying out with Waters, Johnny Shines and John Lee ‘Sonny Boy’ Williamson before he previously his 1st big strike under his personal name with ‘Five Long Years’, face to face label in 1952. He documented thoroughly for Chess Information, having successes with ‘24 Hours’ and ‘3rd Level’. He journeyed to European countries through the ‘Blues Growth’ from the 60s and, taking into consideration himself as well assertive to reside comfortably in america, took up home 1st in Paris and later on in Finland. During this time period he made an appearance with performers as varied as Buddy Man and John Mayall and documented in Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, France and Finland. His 1967 recording on Decca Information, made by Mike Vernon, features a number of the cream from the English blues motion; Mayall, Peter Green, John McVie, Tony McPhee and Aynsley Dunbar. His piano-playing was gradually functional instead of magnificent and his primary power was his capability to come up with lyrics which were pithy and acidic. ‘Five Long Years’ has turned into a blues regular and features within the repertoires of several performers including Waters and B.B. Ruler.
