A quartet formed in Columbus, Georgia, USA, in 1991, East Orange comprise Chad Etchison (acoustic guitar, vocals), Tag Skinner (acoustic guitar), John Skinner (drums) and Alex Johnston (bass). The Skinner brothers and Johnston experienced previously played collectively in a number of unrecorded rings. In 1993 the group relocated to a rented home in Atlanta, after their youngest member experienced graduated. East Orange produced their debut in 1994 using the Navigation Without Figures EP. This received common regional airplay and gained comparisons to both Substitutes and Elvis Costello. Showcases in Nashville and Memphis adopted in 1995, of which period the group’s melodic pop demos gained them columns in mainstream mags such as for example Billboard.
