Duane Denison

Most widely known for his leading edge guitar use the confrontational punk clothing the Jesus Lizard, Duane Denison is among rock’s most challenging (yet oft-overlooked) guitarists. Remarkably, Denison’s early musical curiosity wasn’t punk rock and roll – as he gained a qualification in classic acoustic guitar at Eastern Michigan University or college, and even analyzed with renowned traditional guitarist Christopher Parkening. But at exactly the same time, Denison also taken notice of the guitarists in such art-rock rings as Ruler Crimson, Roxy Music, General public Image, Journal, and Getting rid of Joke. From the past due ’80s, Denison became a member of up with ex-Scratch Acidity users David Yow (vocals) and David Sims (bass), to create the Chicago, IL-based Jesus Lizard. Having a drum machine originally providing the backbeat, drummer Macintosh McNeilly was welcomed onboard with time for the group’s full-length debut, 1990’s Mind. Several more indie produces followed through the entire early ’90s (1991’s Goat, 1992’s Liar, 1994’s Down), where period the quartet constructed a big cult following because of their explosive live present (getting championed continuously in the press by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain didn’t specifically hurt, either). The center of the 10 years noticed the Jesus Lizard to remain with Capitol Information, but after just two more produces, 1996’s Shot and 1998’s Blue, the music group split. Denison after that produced the Denison-Kimball Trio along with ex-Mule percussionist Adam Kimball, issuing three albums, Wall space in the town, Spirit Machine, and Neutrons. The ex-Jesus Lizard six-stringer also offered as the touring guitarist for Hank Williams III from 1999 through 2001, where time he captured a live display by Mr. Bungle (in the insistence of the bandmate in Williams’ group). Denison was impressed by Bungle’s vocalist, Mike Patton, and soon after the two had been introduced, made a decision to type a music group. Denison donated some almost completed unique compositions towards the task, which soon used the name Tomahawk, and welcomed in ex-Helmet drummer John Stanier and current Melvins bassist Kevin Rutmanis. Using the group documenting the recording via tape swapping (all members were by no means in the same space at exactly the same time), the group’s self-titled debut was released via Patton’s label, Ipecac, in 2001.
