Home / Biography / Drain

Drain was the ambient techno alias of Ruler Coffey, better referred to as the drummer from the Butthole Surfers. Blessed in 1964, Coffey became a member of the Butthole Surfers in 1983, and started Drain in 1992 using the LP GRAB Heaven, which — regardless of the existence of examples and drum devices — explored even more traditional guitar-rock surface. However, using the project’s second work, 1996’s Offspeed and WITHIN (released over the indie label Trance Syndicate, an organization owned and controlled by Coffey in his indigenous Austin, Tx), Drain had taken the plunge into experimental dance music, fusing hip-hop and trance beats with an eclectic collage of examples and influences.
