Pursuing his departure from All following the group’s first two albums under that name, vocalist/guitarist Dave Smalley (also formerly of Dag Nasty) come up with Down FOR LEGAL REASONS in 1991 with ex-Clawhammer guitarist Chris Bagarozzi as well as the former Chemical People rhythm portion of Ed Urlik (bass) and Dave Nazworthy (drums). This lineup continued to be together limited to Down By Law’s debut record, 1992’s Blue; when the follow-up, 1994’s Punkrockacademyfightsong, made an appearance, Smalley acquired reconstituted the music group with guitarist Sam Williams III (ex-Balance and Slap of Truth), bassist “Angry” John DiMambro (ex-Clay Idols and Leonards), and drummer Hunter Oswald. This lineup continued to be steady, save for the drum seat, that was occupied by Danny Westman on 1996’s All Scratched Up! and Chris Lagerborg on 1997’s Last from the Sharpshooters. In 1999, the group released their fifth record for Epitaph, Take a flight the Flag. Divide followed a calendar year afterwards. When Windwardtidesandwaywardsails fell in 2003, primary drummer Nazworthy was back the fold.
