Doug Wimbish

Doug Wimbish was perhaps one of the most versatile bassists from the ’80s, in a position to move from pop and mainstream rock and roll session function to rock, funk, and experimental music during the period of the 10 years; he continued with this vein with the 1990s before finally liberating his first single album, Trippy Records for Bass, in 1999. Wimbish could very well be best known because the bassist inside your home band from the famous rap label Sugars Hill, support Grandmaster Adobe flash & the Furious Five on the epochal Message recording, among numerous others. Because the ’80s wore on, though, Sugars Hill discovered itself overtaken by hip-hop improvements outside its steady of artists, and its own house band got already shaped a productive romantic relationship with English dub reggae experimentalist Adrian Sherwood. Wimbish, guitarist Miss McDonald, and drummer Keith LeBlanc started working on a number of tasks with Sherwood, including support ex-Pop Group member Tag Stewart on his single recordings and issuing their very own 12″ singles beneath the name Excess fat Comet. Major Breakdown premiered in 1986 under Keith LeBlanc’s name, though it was essentially an organization cooperation; that group powerful became official once the trio people christened themselves Tackhead and started recording full-length works together with Sherwood. Nevertheless, their two albums — 1989’s Friendly being a Hands Grenade and 1990’s Unusual Stuff — didn’t quite catch the avant-garde Funkadelic-meets-Lee Perry tests of their previously function or of LeBlanc’s “single” albums. When Living Colour bassist Muzz Skillings departed his music group in 1992, Wimbish was tapped as his substitute. Nevertheless, after 1993’s Stain, the group disbanded, and Wimbish came back to session function, playing on albums by Madonna, Annie Lennox, Mick Jagger, the Rolling Rocks, Ron Hardwood, Seal, Joe Satriani, and many more, plus the periodic Sherwood task. Wimbish also reunited with Living Color drummer Will Calhoun within the experimental funk/electronica trio Jungle Funk. In 1999, Sherwood’s On-U Sound label released Wimbish’s first single album, Trippy Records for Bass.
