Doug Ewart

b. 13 Sept 1946, Kingston, Jamaica. Ewart shifted to Chicago in June 1963 and afterwards studied music on the AACM. His early affects included Charles Mingus, Clifford Dark brown and Eric Dolphy, the last mentioned’s example persuading Ewart to understand bassoon and bass clarinet furthermore to alto as well as other saxophones and flute. He provides played with a lot of his AACM co-workers, documenting with (for instance) Roscoe Mitchell (Sketches From Bamboo), Muhal Richard Abrams (Lifea Blinec), Anthony Braxton (For Trio), Leo Smith (Budding OF THE Rose) and Henry Threadgill, within the X-75 group. Specifically, Ewart formed a link with trombonist George Lewis in 1971 which has continued to today’s: he provides played on many of Lewis’ tasks (Chicago Gradual Dance, Homage To Charles Parker) and documented a duo record with him. Head of the clarinet quartet (Crimson Hillsides), Ewart can be an achieved instrument-maker, especially renowned for his superbly crafted Ewart flutes.
