Doreen Thobekile

b. c.1943, Natal. Elevated in Durban, while in college Thobekile sang, danced and discovered to try out mbira and umqangala. She became a specialist dancer, touring internationally with African Follies. Thobekile frequented additional African countries even though in Zimbabwe (after that Rhodesia) wedded a English white man called Webster. This resulted in them both becoming deported to Britain. In 1971 she made an appearance as a vocalist in London in Ipi Tombi, spending a lot of the 70s in the display. She also made an appearance in stage productions from the Pied Piper Of Hamelin and Poppie Nongena. While in London, Thobekile also became a co-founder of Shikisha, an all-woman dance troupe. Thobekile continued to be located in London where she’s been energetic in cultural tasks in institutions and she also completed similar actions in European countries and THE UNITED STATES. For quite some time Thobekile sang and danced with Transglobal Underground, producing several information, and she made an appearance at WOMAD celebrations internationally. She also made an appearance on stage in 2004’s The Playground during London’s Dark Background month. Thobekile’s repertoire centres upon Zulu music aswell as strains from various other lands but is certainly fused with modern pop from the South African townships.
