Don Wilkerson

Biography

The archetypal big-toned Texas tenor of Don Wilkerson was unfortunately not documented on record just as much because the quality of his music deserved; he was a fantastic, earthy soul-jazz saxophonist with the capacity of playing blues, ballads, bop, golf swing, and gospel-tinged R&B. Wilkerson was created in Moreauville, LA, in 1932, and initial discovered the alto sax; by his teenagers, he had transferred to Houston and was achieved more than enough on tenor to try out with R&B clothes going by Amos Milburn and Charles Dark brown. Wilkerson performed on a few of Ray Charles’ first recording sessions within the middle-’50s, taking unforgettable solos on classics like “I ACQUIRED a female,” “This LITTTLE LADY of Mine,” and “Hallelujah I REALLY LIKE Her So.” He also led a music group in Miami for a short while, and participated in various jam periods with Cannonball Adderley. Adderley created Wilkerson’s first documenting program, a 1960 time for Riverside entitled The Tx Twister. After another brief stint with Charles, he authorized with Blue Notice and documented three stellar, soulful albums over 1962-1963: Elder Don, Preach, Sibling!, and Shoutin’, which presented Give Green on acoustic guitar. Unfortunately, non-e was very effective, and Wilkerson didn’t record any more as a innovator. He continued to be in Houston for some of his existence and passed on on July 18, 1986.
