Don Schlitten

Don Schlitten was involved with countless sessions like a maker, particularly along with his primary like, straight-ahead bop-oriented jazz. He co-founded the Sign label with Jules Colomby and Harold Goldberg in 1955, documenting Duke Jordan, Gigi Gryce, Crimson Rodney, while others. The label just lasted a few years before for sale to Savoy. Schlitten worked well as a maker on the freelance basis before early ’70s, when he became a member of Joe Areas in founding Cobblestone, a subsidiary of Buddah. Among Schlitten’s main projects were several Sonny Stitt’s finest classes (Melody Up and Constellation) and six information cut in the 1972 Newport in NY Jazz Festival. Later on in 1972, Schlitten became a member of Areas at Muse and each of them created Onyx in 1973. A couple of years later, the companions finished their collaborations; Areas were left with Muse, and Schlitten founded the Xanadu label. Through the following 10 years, Don Schlitten created over 200 produces for Xanadu, including then-current bop times for famous brands Barry Harris, Al Cohn, Charles McPherson, as well as others, plus historic reissues of bop classes (mainly small-label dates from your middle- to past due ’40s). Schlitten had not been just the label mind and maker, but wrote lots of the liner records.
