Don Ewell

Biography

A significant if underrated stride pianist, Don Ewell was inspired by Jelly Move Morton and Earl Hines, but could stride like Body fat Waller, as well. He began leading his personal trios in Baltimore within the middle-’30s; played through the New Orleans jazz revival (beginning within the middle-’40s) with Bunk Johnson, Muggsy Spanier, Sidney Bechet, and Child Ory (1953); and was with Jack port Teagarden during 1957-1964. Ewell occasionally played duets using the weakening Willie “the Lion” Smith in the past due ’60s before shifting to New Orleans, where he worked well frequently during his last years. He documented for Good Period Jazz (three 1956-1957 times can be found on Compact disc), GHB/Audiophile/Jazzology, Delmark, Unwanted fat Cat’s Jazz, and Chiaroscuro; previously unreleased pieces were released posthumously by Stomp Off and Pumpkin.
