Dom Flemons

A rootsy singer/songwriter having a bent toward Americana, folk, banjo, and jug music group music, Dom Flemons 1st found the public’s attention as an associate from the old-timey string ensemble the Carolina Chocolates Drops. A indigenous of Phoenix, Az, Flemons was raised hearing his parents’ classic R&B collection. A gifted guitarist and harmonica participant by his teenagers, he quickly extended his musical limitations, listening to performers like Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and Chuck Berry, in addition to searching for such early progenitors of American origins music as Woody Guthrie, Tom Paxton, and Jack port Elliott. After senior high school, Flemons went to Northern Arizona College or university in Flagstaff, where he performed locally, frequently busking on the road. It was during Flagstaff that he arrived to connection with veteran percussionist, banjo participant, and folklorist Sule Greg Wilson, an area musical oracle who got used everyone from famous Nigerian percussionist Babatunde Olatunji to such famous Piedmont blues performers as fiddler Joe Thompson and guitarist/vocalist Algia Mae Hinton. Wilson became a coach to Flemons and helped him develop his playing and historic knowledge of blues and folk music. In 2005, at Wilson’s behest, Flemons went to the Dark Banjo Gathering, a four-day event celebrating the African, Afro-Caribbean, and African-American roots of banjo music. Through the gathering, Flemons befriended fellow origins music lovers vocalist/banjo participant Rhiannon Giddens and vocalist/violinist Justin Robinson. Influenced by their event encounters, the trio shaped the Carolina Chocolate Drops and released many extremely acclaimed albums including 2006’s Dona Got a Ramblin’ Brain, 2010’s Genuine Negro Jig, and 2012’s Departing Eden, amongst others. As a single artist, Flemons continuing to execute and record, debuting in 2007 with Dance Music Ballads & Blues. Furthermore to creating a number of various other performers, he also released a collaborative record with guitarist Boo Hanks known as Buffalo Junction. After amicably parting methods using the Carolina Delicious chocolate Drops in 2012, Flemons refocused on his single work, launching the album Potential customer Hill on Unwanted fat Possum in 2014.
