Dixie Gentlemen

The Dixie Gentlemen were a bluegrass group from Alabama who had been active through the early-’60s folk revival. Herschel Sizemore (mandolin) and Rual Yarbrough (banjo) initial fulfilled in 1956 playing in an organization known as the Alabamians, and became a member of up with Sizemore’s friend, Jake Landers (electric guitar, business lead vocals), in 1957 after Landers was discharged in the service. They initial called themselves the united states Gentlemen, but quickly transformed it to Dixie if they uncovered another group who currently acquired that name. They toured in and near their house state for another few years, producing appearances on regional radio and tv. They trim their first record, “Pray for me personally” b/w “Three Techniques,” in 1959 for the tiny Blue Sky label, and shortly continued to back again fiddler Tommy Jackson with an record for Dot. Beneath the alias the Blue Ridge Hill Children, the Gentlemen documented two albums for another little label, Period, and finished up credit scoring a cope with United Performers. Their lone record to discover wide release, THE UNITED STATES Design of the Dixie Gentlemen, made an appearance in 1963 and included all-original material, mainly compiled by Landers. The group’s last documenting session throughout their preliminary lifespan occurred in 1966, with support by fiddler Vassar Clements (a sometime cohort) and dobro participant Tut Taylor; Yarbrough afterwards released it by himself label. Following the group’s break up, Sizemore and Yarbrough both proved helpful as sidemen with performers both prominent and regional, and afterwards reunited briefly as the Dixiemen. All three Gentlemen reunited with Clements in 1972 and documented an record for Aged Homestead; they might reconvene once again toward the dawn from the ’90s for another record on Rutabaga.
