Dick Johnson

A versatile and dear reed participant, Dick Johnson was longer known for his beautiful build and his fluent design. He began on piano, switching to clarinet when he was 16 and adding alto 3 years afterwards. Johnson attended the brand new England Conservatory for just two years. Structured throughout a lot of his profession in Boston, Johnson freelanced and trained in the town. His even more significant organizations included Charlie Spivak (1952-1954), Dave McKenna, Eddie Costa, as well as the ensembles from the Berklee University of Music and Woody Herman’s Orchestra (1980). In the 1980s and ’90s, Johnson (who uncovered a Charlie Parker impact on alto) was frequently highlighted with Artie Shaw’s part-time orchestra, acquiring the clarinet solos. Johnson led albums for EmArcy (1956), Riverside (1957), RFT (1971), Concord (three pieces during 1979-1981), and North Superstar (1994). Dick Johnson passed away in Boston on January 10, 2010 at age 84.
