David “Fathead” Newman

As an adolescent, David Newman played professionally around Dallas and Fort Worthy of with Charlie Parker’s coach, Buster Smith, and in addition with Ornette Coleman within a music group led by tenor saxophonist Crimson Connors. In the first ’50s, Newman proved helpful locally with such R&B music artists as Lowell Fulson and T-Bone Walker. In 1952, Newman shaped his longest-lasting & most essential musical association with Ray Charles, who got performed piano in Fulson’s group. Newman remained with Charles’ music group from 1954-1964, while concurrently documenting as a head along with a sideman with, amongst others, his hometown associate, tenor saxophonist Adam Clay. Upon departing Charles, Newman remained in Dallas for just two years. Then moved to NY, where he documented under Ruler Curtis and Eddie Harris; he also performed many industrial and soul schedules. Newman came back to Charles for a short amount of time in 1970-1971; from 1972-1974 he used Crimson Garland and Herbie Mann. Newman parlayed the renown he obtained from his encounter with Charles right into a pretty successful recording profession. Within the ’60s and ’70s, he documented some greatly orchestrated, pop-oriented edges for Atlantic and in the ’80s he led the casual hard bop program, but Newman’s métier was as an ace accompanist. Throughout his profession, he documented with a number of non-jazz performers; Newman’s brawny, arrogant tenor audio graced the albums of Aretha Franklin, Dr. John, and many more. It is, actually, Newman’s terse, earthy improvisations with Charles that stay his most quality work. Newman started a productive romantic relationship with HighNote Information in the close from the 1990s, liberating an impressive group of albums, including Chillin’ (1999), Keep carefully the Spirits Performing (2001), Davey Blue (2001), The Present (2003), Track for the brand new Man (2004), I RECALL Sibling Ray (a shifting tribute to Ray Charles released in 2005), Cityscape (2006), and Lifestyle (2007).
