David Binney

Alto saxophonist David Binney has generated himself as a genuine first and critically acclaimed performer in progressive jazz of contemporary times. Created in Miami, FL, August 2, 1961, he spent a while in Detroit while his parents, who have been big music enthusiasts, had been at Wayne Condition University. They released him towards the music of John Coltrane, Kilometers Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, and Wayne Shorter, Jimi Hendrix, Milton Nascimento, and Sly & the Family members Stone amongst others. Growing up within the seaside community of Carpenteria, CA, Binney started formal studies for the saxophone with different teachers in close by LA. In 1980 at age 19 he shifted to NEW YORK, where he was tutored by Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, and George Coleman. In 1989 he was granted a grant type the Country wide Endowment for the Arts, deploying it to record his 1st CD, Point Video game in 1991 for the Owl label. He was a sideman for Aretha Franklin and Maceo Parker, was and briefly from the M-Base techno-funk group, and then shaped a special collaboration with tenor saxophonist Chris Potter. Binney was an associate from the short-lived but innovative ensembles Shed Tribe, and Lan Xang with fellow saxophonist Donny McCaslin, was with Uri Caine’s Gustav Mahler and J.S. Bach Tasks, the Drew Gress-led combo Jagged Sky, the Maria Schneider and Gil Evans orchestras, and Medeski, Martin & Real wood. Audioquest released his second recording as a innovator THE BLISSFUL LUXURY of Speculating in 1995. He began his personal record label, Mythology, yielding albums Absolve to Dream as well as the 1st Lan Xang Compact disc (1998), in addition to Welcome alive (2004) and From Airplanes (2006). The 2001 documenting South for the Work label brought Binney’s cooperation with Potter to complete fruition. He’s also led classes for the Criss Mix label on Bastion of Sanity (2005) and Towns and Desire (2006), as well as for the Italian Crimson label on Afindad (2001) and Fiestas de Agosto (2005), while Lan Xang released a second disk for Naxos information in 2000. A follow-up on Work, Stability, from 2002 discovered Binney teamed once again with McCaslin. At musicians he spent some time working with; Jim Hall, Expenses Frisell, Joel Harrison, Steve Bernstein & Sex Mob, Tag Turner, Craig Taborn, Leni Stern, Alex Sipiagin, Thomas Morgan, Dan Weiss, Kenny Wollesen, Eivind Opsvik, Edward Simon, Jacob Sacks, Cecil McBee, Brian Cutting tool, Scott Colley, Adam Rogers, Wayne Krantz, Tim Lefebvre, Fima Ephron, Jim Dark, Bobby Previte, Jeff Hirschfield, Ben Perowsky, Ben Monder, David Gilmore, Lonnie Plaxico, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Adam Genus, Rodney Holmes, Nate Hardwood, and Lucia Pulido. David Binney performs frequently on the 55 Club in NEW YORK, a gig he provides held for ten years.
