Dave Tough

Dave Rough was popular (and infamous) for a number of things. He was a refined and flexible drummer who hated to single. He was an intellectual whose profession was frequently rather aimless. Hard was also a painfully slim alcoholic whose taking in got him into problems frequently and shortened his existence. Although he didn’t officially go to Austin SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL (he was at close by Oak Park Large), Hard was in early stages from the Austin Large Gang, learning to be a good friend of Bud Freeman. Hard played at vacation resorts during his summer season holidays of 1923 and 1924, and became a full-time musician the next year. After using Sig Meyers, Husk O’Hare’s Wolverines, Artwork Kassel, and Jack port Gardner, amongst others, Hard and Danny Polo got a motorboat to European countries in 1927. He spent 2 yrs overseas, mostly using George Carhart for the Continent, came back towards the U.S. briefly, and returned to Paris and caused Mezz Mezzrow and Carhart once again. After returning home in-may 1929, Tough caused Benny Goodman, Crimson Nichols, performed locally in Chicago, and took period off because of illness. Hard was largely beyond music during a lot of 1932-1935. After becoming with Ray Noble’s Orchestra briefly, he used Tommy Dorsey’s Big Music group (1936-37), Crimson Norvo, Bunny Berigan, Benny Goodman (where he was Gene Krupa’s alternative during March – July, 1938), after that back again with Dorsey through the summertime of 1939. Hard became a normal for the Dixieland circuit for a while, using Bud Freeman’s Summa Cum Laude Music group, the Jack port Teagarden Big Music group, Mezz Mezzrow, and Joe Marsala and a come back engagement with Benny Goodman. He also got several additional intervals beyond music because of illness. After brief stints with Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, and Charlie Spivak, Hard spent section of 1942-1944 within the Navy where he used Shaw’s Naval Music group. He made a solid effect during 1944-1945 as a significant person in Woody Herman’s Initial Herd, where his drumming was quite important. Difficult was mostly of the Dixielanders in a position to do a reputable work playing bop-oriented music. After departing Herman in Sept 1945, he caused Joe Marsala, Eddie Condon (1946), Jerry Grey, Jazz in the Philharmonic, the Charlie Ventura-Bill Harris Group, and Muggsy Spanier (1947-1948). Nevertheless, alcoholism and disease plagued him and he passed away from head accidental injuries after dropping down in a Newark road. Dave Difficult, who in a few methods was the Bunny Berigan from the drums, led just one single record day, four titles slice for Jamboree (and later on reissued by Onyx) in 1946.
