Dave Matthews

b. 6 June 1911, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA, d. 1997. As a man Matthews examined music in Oklahoma and Chicago. He became efficient on alto and tenor saxophones and in addition developed abilities as an arranger. Swept up in the golf swing era, he performed (mainly alto) with Ben Pollack, Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. In 1939 he still left Goodman to look with Harry Adam who had produced a new group. Matthews added some great swinging graphs for the music group and over another few years continuing to create for and in addition play with (today mainly on tenor) rings led by Hal McIntyre, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton and Charlie Barnet. Using the last mentioned, his admiration for the stylings of Duke Ellington had been allowed to move unfettered. Every once in awhile he led his very own bands nonetheless it was as an arranger that he became most widely known through the 50s. Qualified though he was as a new player, and with unique thoughts on the days when he performed solos, Matthews was generally content to stay an private sideman in the rings where he played which he helped to attain reputation through his composing.
