Decidedly an applicant for the title of most effective folk drummer in England, Mattacks has, while holding straight down the drum throne in Fairport Convention on / off since 1969 (following death of Martin Lamble in a vehicle accident), used a lot of the notable English folk artists working in the later ’60s onwards, in addition to working sessions for most of the less popular performers. His set of credits is normally impressive, easily complementing that of bassist Danny Thompson. His solid, crisp percussion design is much sought after, resulting in his most recent departure from Fairport Convention in 1998, though background indicates that may very well be temporary.
