Darnell Howard

An experienced soloist who occasionally displayed a hyper design on clarinet in old age that was also influenced with the smoother Jimmie Noone, Darnell Howard had an extended profession. Both of his parents had been musicians. Howard began on violin when he was seven, adding clarinet and reeds down the road. He began playing skillfully in 1912 while still in senior high school. Howard used John H. Wickcliffe’s Ginger Orchestra during 1913-1916 and in 1917 visited New York, functioning and documenting with W.C. Helpful (on violin). Howard after that led a music group in Chicago, gigged with Charlie Elgar (1921), was component of Adam P. Johnson’s Plantation Times Band that been to London in 1923, and produced a return visit to Europe the next year using the Performing Syncopators. In Chicago, Howard used Carroll Dickerson, Dave Peyton, & most notably Ruler Oliver’s Dixie Syncopators. After a trip to Shanghai with the brand new York Performing Syncopators, Howard rejoined Oliver and shortly was using both Erskine Tate and Carroll Dickerson. 1928 was spent with Jimmy Wade’s Dixielanders and leading his very own quartet. Howard caused Dave Peyton during 1929-1930, acquired a short stint with Jerome Carrington and was a reliable fixture using the Earl Hines big music group during 1931-1937. He freelanced for a couple of years and spent brief intervals with Fletcher Henderson’s Orchestra and Coleman Hawkins (1941). Howard led his personal music group in Chicago during 1943-1945, was with Child Ory in California during portion of 1945, and freelanced in Chicago for a couple of years including using Doc Evans. In 1948 he relocated to California to become listed on Muggsy Spanier’s group, remaining five years. After stints with Bob Scobey and Jimmy Archey, Howard was portion of Earl Hines’ Dixieland music group in SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA during 1955-1962; during 1956-1957 he documented several superb albums with Don Ewell. Disease triggered him to keep Hines although he retrieved for a while, dealing with Elmer Snowden and Burt Bales, plus his personal organizations. After touring European countries with the brand new Orleans All-Stars in early 1966, Howard became sick in america and passed away a couple of months later on. He just led one documenting date, leading to four options for Great Period Jazz in 1950 where he fronted Bob Scobey’s music group.
