Dark Meat

The Athens, GA, music collective Dark Meats were formed by singer/guitarist Jim McHugh and bassist Ben Clack once they moved to Athens from NEW YORK in 2004 and met guitarist Kris Deason (of Subversivo) and drummer Forrest Leffer (formerly of Carrie Countries) while working at a downtown restaurant. The group grew following that to add second drummer Chris “SpiritBird” Bradley (afterwards changed by Jason Robira), a backup vocal trio dubbed the Subtweeters (Heather Heyn-Leffer, Web page Campbell, and Claire Campbell), and a horn section led by Charlie Estes (trumpet) and Aaron Jollay (trombone), and offering reed players Jeff Tobias, Alexis Daglis, and Becky Noble. Extra people included fiddle and bass clarinet participant John Fernandes (previously of Elf Power and Circulatory Program), percussionist Chris Smith, and Michael “Toshira” Davis on didgeridoo. Dark Meats released their debut record, General Indians, through Cloud Recordings on Oct 24, 2006.
