Danny Turner

b. Wayne Daniel Turner, 8 March 1920, Farrell, Pa, USA, d. 14 Apr 1995. Elevated in upstate NY, he analyzed music, then started playing alto saxophone while surviving in Philadelphia in the past due 40s; he connected with many recognized jazzmen including John Coltrane and Philly Joe Jones. He sometimes led his personal little groups and in addition worked with additional market leaders including Johnny Lynch as well as the Four Kings AND ALSO A Queen vocal group. In 1950 he was an associate from the Gerald Wilson big music group that followed Billie Holiday on the devastating tour of southern claims. He was an associate from the Milt Buckner little group for four years within the 50s and in addition played and documented with Dakota Staton, Jimmy McGriff, Ray Charles among others through the entire 60s, occasionally playing alto, occasionally tenor saxophone. He spent a while with Machito and, in the first 70s, became an on-call alternative with Count number Basie. In the mid-70s he was completely with Basie, generally playing alto and finally becoming section head. A liquid, elegant soloist, Turner’s design always charmed and frequently sparked with boppish fireplace. After Basie passed away, Turner continued to try out in alumni rings and was an associate of the carrying on Count number Basie Orchestra until quickly before his loss of life.
