Biography

Although underappreciated and woefully overlooked throughout their initial tenure jointly, the great early-’70s outfit Cymande (pronounced Sah-mahn-day) was among the initial to merge African rhythms with rock, funk, reggae, and soul. Made up of people who hailed from such spectacular locales as Guyana, Jamaica, and St. Vincent, the nine-man lineup (who have been all completely self-taught) included Steve Scipio (bass), Ray Ruler (vocals, percussion), Derek Gibbs (alto/soprano), Pablo Gonsales (congas), Joey Dee (vocals, percussion), Peter Serreo (tenor), Sam Kelly (drums), Mike Rose (alto, flute, bongos), and Patrick Patterson (electric guitar). The music group issued a complete of three produces: 1972’s self-titled debut (which spawned among their best-known tracks, “The Message,” peaking at amount 22 in the local R&B graphs in 1974), 1973’s Second Period Circular, and 1974’s Guaranteed Heights — before breaking up. But with the ’90s, Cymande became the recipient of a solid cult pursuing as another monitor off their debut, “Bra,” was included on the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s film Crooklyn, and many of their tracks had been sampled by rap performers (including Raze, Get good at Ace, MC Solaar, De La Spirit, DJ Kool, as well as the Fugees). Because of sudden desire for Cymande, two compilations had been released — a English double-CD entitled The Message (which gathered all three of the albums), a 13-monitor collection, The Spirit of Rasta, and on top of that, Renegades of Funk. Cymande officially reunited in 2012, with the majority of their initial users — including frontmen Scipio and Patterson. In 2015, they released A STRAIGHTFORWARD Act of Trust, their 1st recording in four years. John Schroeder, who helmed their first sessions, created the set.
