Biography

Founded by vocalist and maracas player Maria Emilia Garcia, guitarist Pancho Cobas as well as the group’s first director Francisco Coba La in 1939, Cuarteto Patria attained international success after guitarist/tres player and lead vocalist Eliades Ochoa assumed leadership in 1978. Beneath the assistance of Santiago, Chile-born Ochoa, the group extended its early bolero and criolla repertoire to add a dance-inspiring mixture of kid montuno, guaracha and guajira. Although they released no albums ahead of Ochoa’s entrance, Cuarteto Patria provides released four unforgettable albums since – A Una Coquesta in 1993, Se Salto El Leon in 1995 and Cubafrica, documented with Cameroon-born saxophonist Manu Dibango, in 1998. Released in Sept 2000, Tribute TOWARDS THE Cuarteto Patria celebrated the band’s sixtieth wedding anniversary. Cuarteto Patria was highlighted on Ochoa’s single albums, including his masterpiece, Sublime Illusion, a Grammy nominee within the group of “greatest traditional exotic and Latin functionality of 1999”.

15 He is good friends with pianist Sandro Russo, Israel Gursky and conductor Eugene Kohn.
16 Known for the Il Trovatore with Deutsche Grammophon directed by Philipp Stölzl.
17 Has one older brother and four sisters.
18 He was a professional soccer player from 1988 to 1994 playing among other teams in Boca juniors in Buenos Aires.
19 Holds dual citizenship - USA and Uruguayan.
20 Consider one of his best engagement his 2003 short appearance at Carnegie Hall with Opera Orchestra of New York.
21 His grandfather was first violinist in Montevideo from 1940's throughout 1970's.
