Crystal Skulls

Although Seattle pop quartet the Crystal Skulls have impeccable indie credentials — they record for the faultlessly hip indie Suicide Press Information and singer Christian Wargo is a previous member of both Danielson Famile and Pedro the Lion — the main of their sound is a resolutely unfashionable strain of 1970s AM pop music, one which includes Steely Dan, Wings, Todd Rundgren, 10cc, and Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Road.” Wargo produced the Crystal Skulls in 2003 with bassist Yuuki Matthews, guitarist Ryan Phillips, and drummer Casey Foubert, all fellow veterans from the Seattle indie picture. (Matthews and Foubert had been two-thirds of Seldom; Foubert was also a part-time person in Pedro the Lion.) Naming themselves after a fringe supernatural perception that 13 historic crystal skulls had been hidden around the world by some type of higher awareness, the Crystal Skulls released their initial album, Blocked Quantities, in the springtime of 2005. A somewhat even more contemporary-sounding follow-up, Outgoing Behavior, adopted in the springtime of 2006, garnering press evaluations to famous brands Jens Lekman as well as the Concretes.
