Cristina

Biography

Merging Bertolt Brecht, Leiber & Stoller, punk, and disco right into a distinctive brew that parodied and questioned ’80s excess, Cristina’s acerbic wit produced her a revered cult shape despite the fact that she only released two albums. Delivered for an American article writer and illustrator along with a French neo-Freudian psychoanalyst, Cristina Monet Palaci got a culturally literate years as a child that resulted in research at Harvard along with a stint being a movie theater article writer for The Community Voice. While composing for the alt-weekly in 1978, she fulfilled and started dating Michael Zilkha, co-founder from the eclectic record label ZE with Michel Esteban and an Oxford graduate whose family members owned the United kingdom store Mothercare. Cristina started her musical profession that summertime with among the label’s initial tasks, “Disco Clone,” an individual written by among her Harvard classmates. Designed to capitalize for the disco trend, the John Cale-produced monitor proclaimed her inaugural cooperation with songwriter/arranger August Darnell (aka Child Creole). It became a cult strike that resulted in several even more singles, including a reworked “Disco Clone” offering an uncredited Kevin Kline, a synth pop cover from the Beatles’ “Drive My Car,” along with a edition of Leiber & Stoller’s world-weary “Can be That All THERE’S?” with brand-new lyrics by Cristina which were therefore provocative how the songwriting duo was granted an injunction against additional product sales from it in 1980. That season also saw the discharge of Cristina’s self-titled debut record, which was made by Darnell and blended Latin beats and cinematic imagery with disco. She implemented it with “Issues BREAK APART,” an eerie vacation single that made an appearance on ZE’s 1981 Xmas Record. On her behalf second record, 1984’s Rest It Off, Cristina caused producer Don Is at his Detroit studio room. Joined with the Knack’s Doug Frieder and Barry Reynolds and Ben Brierley of Marianne Faithfull’s music group, she place her very own playfully jaded spin on John Conlee’s “She Can’t State That Anymore,” Truck Morrison’s “Blue Cash,” as well as the Threepenny Opera’s “Ballad of Immoral Profits” in addition to original tunes such as for example “He Dines From Loss of life” and “What’s a woman to accomplish?,” which she afterwards referred to as her anthem. Rest It Off gained critical acclaim however, not product sales, and Cristina retired from music. After beginning a family group with Zilkha and shifting to Tx, Cristina divorced him and relocated back to NYC to spotlight composing essays and evaluations. She arrived of pension briefly in 2004 to lead vocals to “Immediate Stressed,” a cooperation with Ursula 1000 that premiered in 2006. Also in 2004, Rest It Off and her 1st recording — rechristened Doll inside a Box — had been reissued by ZE with reward tracks.
