A jazz banjoist and guitarist, Guesnon proved helpful in lots of ‘Crescent Town’ rings from 1927 to 1965, frequently recording being a sideman from 1951. He also toured with Small Sibling Montgomery’s Jackson-based Southland Troubadours in the middle-30s, and it could have already been this encounter that prompted ‘Mississippi City’, a blues tribute to Jackson documented in 1940. (‘Iberville And Franklin’ do the same for New Orleans.) Guesnon didn’t play on these recordings, which display him to have already been a likeable, clear-voiced vocalist, as adept at ballads much like the blues.
